Wine & Whiskey Wednesdays: Oakland Cooking Class Edition

8/25/2015

August 12th, marked our first cooking class extravaganza in the East Bay! OrgOrg partnered with The Town Kitchen team in Oakland for a night of food fun! A big shout-out to all who attended and to the incredible Team at Town Kitchen. For some quick background, they are a Bay Area-wide lunch delivery company, helping create community through food. Specifically their Youth Food Project helps educate, train, and employ underprivileged youth. Truly amazing!

Our culinary night of adventure started overlooking Lake Merrit. We had drinks offered by some of their alcoholic alchemist partners and a few tasty treats: tacos, tofu, and beet patties (and that doesn’t event serve them justice)! After a brief intro from Sabrina Mutukisna, the CEO and Co-Founder, we moved to the kitchen.

Executive Chef, Jefferson Sevilla proceeded to wow us with our very own live cooking demo. He carefully created and explained the process behind perfectly searing a salmon steak with a spectacularly delectable cream of corn and veggies. The best part, of course, were the tastings. Then, we divided and tried to conquer by breaking off into teams. This was to 1) complete the foodie and kitchen tools trivia and 2) for the cooking contest to come! The Broccoli Queens nailed the trivia section and won some super cute tote bags! Congrats ladies!

Then came the biggest part of the evening: The Top Chef Challenge. In our same groups, we were given a certain number of ingredients and were asked to prepare a “Backyard BBQ” to wow the judges, Chef Jefferson and his trusted assistants. With zucchinis, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, chicken, and Italian sausage in hands, the teams went to work. The kitchen exploded in a frenzy of Office Operations Warriors with knives and fry pans in hand.  With only 45 minutes on the clock, everyone worked diligently to prepare their meals, and plate them for the final judgment. The biggest surprise came when the vegetarian team, having lost a member (due to a previous engagement, not a loss or serious injury) won the tasting round!

It was a night to truly remember in the OrgOrg Event Recipe Book (see what I did there?). We can’t wait to present the community with more! Dalyte, our Head of Events, is amazing!
